Our story
From Zonnekaart to ESG-Maps
MapGear B.V. was founded in 2013 by Wouter Goedhart and Egbert Griffioen with one clear mission: to make spatial data accessible to everyone. Our first product was Zonnekaart – a revolutionary tool that allowed citizens to easily calculate their roof’s solar potential.
What started as a consumer tool for solar energy quickly evolved into professional solutions. In 2015 we delivered ‘Zon zoekt Drenthe’, a project that mapped solar potential for all municipalities in the province of Drenthe. This established our reputation in the sustainable energy sector.
From 2018 we developed Zonnekaart Pro for professionals, and in 2024 we launched ESG-Maps, our platform for climate adaptation, energy transition and citizen participation. Today we serve over 300 organisations across Europe.

2013
MapGear founded
MapGear was founded by Wouter Goedhart and Egbert Griffioen with a bold vision to make GIS technology accessible to everyone. Our first product, Zonnekaart, revolutionised how citizens could check their roof’s solar potential.
2015
Zon zoekt Drenthe
Key milestone with ‘Zon zoekt Drenthe’ – a project that mapped solar potential for all municipalities in the province of Drenthe. This demonstrated our ability to deliver large-scale geographic analyses and established our reputation in the sustainable energy sector.
2017
New headquarters
Move to our new headquarters in Deventer, in the historic De Gasfabriek. This modern location gave us more workspace and placed us in a thriving tech ecosystem.
2018
Zonnekaart Pro
Launch of Zonnekaart Pro, an advanced evolution of our original solar map tool. This professional application enabled area analyses, feasibility studies and reporting for architects, engineers and urban planners.
2019
MapTalk launch
Launch of MapTalk, our citizen participation platform. This tool transformed how municipalities gather public input, enabling residents to give feedback directly via interactive maps.
2023
ISO certifications
Dual ISO certification: ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 27001 for information security. These confirmed our commitment to excellence and opened doors to enterprise clients.
2024
ESG-Maps
Record year with the launch of ESG-Maps – our platform for energy transition and ESG insight. We expanded our offer with modules for climate adaptation, citizen participation and sustainability monitoring.
